According to various estimates, surveys and experiments, it is believed that today there are almost two billion websites online. The number, by any measure, is more than enormous. This creates a lot of room for the major web platforms to shine.

To be more precise, the most recent reported number is exactly 1,652,185,816 websites, as pointed out by Netcraft in its November 2018 web server survey.

Think about it: 1.65 billion websites means that there is roughly one website for every five people in the world. That number is even more impressive when you consider that approximately half of the world's population has access to the Internet.

"What

Does this mean that one in five people is a programmer who knows how to create a website?

Of course not! The secret is something else. The fact that we have nearly two billion websites online today is thanks to what we call content management systems, or CMS for short.

Simply put, a CMS is an online software that allows anyone to create a working website without having to get their hands dirty under the hood, messing around with all the code.. In fact, no coding or programming knowledge is required to create/run a CMS-based website.

That's why several popular CMS tools now dominate all lists of the best website platforms! It is estimated that about half of all websites run on some kind of CMS.

What are the TOP CMS platforms?

WordPress is the CMS that rules! There is simply no other way to say this. According to the latest data, WordPress controls almost 60% of the CMS market. What is even more impressive is that almost 30% of all websites run on WordPress. That's among all websites! Knowing these numbers, it should come as no surprise that this same website also runs on WordPress.

Joomla and Drupal follow WordPress with approximately 6.6% and 4.6% of CMS market share, respectively. Right after the pair, we have Magento, previously the most popular e-commerce platform, currently with a 2.4% CMS market share.

You probably noticed the word "formerly" there: Magento was THE CMS that existed in the past, and surely the most well-known and powerful e-commerce solution of all.

Then, WordPress appeared and, along with it, the excellent plugin WooCommerceWordPress e-commerce version. According to the latest dataWooCommerce has grown ahead of Magento in popularity.

When we talk about main web platforms for e-commerce, WooCommerce has a 10% market share, while Magneto has the 9%. WordPress and its various side tools are taking the web by storm.

There are also some new entrants in the CMS space this year, and I'm pleased to report on them as well. There is also another web platform that deserves a big mention: Shopify.
